Cut

THE SPARKLE OF A DIAMOND. The cut refers to not only the shape of the diamond but most importantly how well it is cut to create FIRE, BRILLIANCE AND SCINTILLATION. While all the other C’S are determined by nature, cut is the only factor that can be determined by man. Therefore cut is perhaps the most important factor of the 4C’S that should be taken into consideration when choosing a diamond.

A polished diamond’s beauty lies in its complex relationship with light, how light strikes the surface, how much light enters the diamond, and how and what form the light returns to your eye. To achieve such perfection, it takes an expert craftsman to cut a rough diamond into its correct proportions, symmetry and polish allowing you to achieve maximum fire, brilliance and scintillation.

Colour

IN THE DIAMOND INDUSTRY, THE TERM ‘COLOUR’ EQUATES TO THE ‘WHITENESS’ OR LACK OF COLOUR OF THE DIAMOND.

Although many people think of diamonds to be colourless, truly colourless diamonds are actually very rare. When we speak of colour in diamonds we actually mean the degree of colourlessness. While most diamonds are white, most are not truly colourless. Many have a tint of yellow, brown or sometimes grey. Diamonds are graded according to its whiteness or colourless state, the whiter it is greater the value.

The highest colour grade is D, being colourless making it more rare and valuable and the lowest colour grade being Z. Although we all would like to choose a diamond in the colourless range D-F, bear in mind the difference in appearance between the colourless (D-F) and near colourless(G-I) is not detectable to the naked eye, however there is a significant difference in price. Therefore choosing the G-I range (near colourless) will give you tremendous value by still achieving the colourless appearance.

Clarity

Clarity

Clarity measures the flaws or inclusions that often occur in diamonds during their formation process.

It is extremely rare to find a diamond without any internal or external characteristics referred to as inclusions. Although these characteristics de-value a diamond, they also assist gemmologists to separate natural diamond from synthetics. Diamonds with the least imperfections receives high clarity grades, however most imperfections can only be seen under a microscope or a 10x loupe therefore doesn’t affect the beauty of a diamond. The highest clarity grade being flawless (F) and the lowest being Included (I1-I3).

Carat

Carat

The carat refers to the weight of a diamond

1.00ct (carat) equals 200mg in weight. The carat is the least of the Four C’s that needs to be taken into consideration when purchasing a diamond. However there are two factors to bear in mind when choosing the right carat weight for you. Don’t be under the impression that ‘bigger is better’.

The rule of thumb would be that diamond price increases with carat weight as larger diamonds are rarer and more desirable therefore making it be more valuable. This is not always the case as any two diamonds of equal weights can be significantly different in price depending on the three other four c’s.
